For the first time, Charlize Theron talks about joining Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. She plays Circe, the famous Greek sorceress who meets Odysseus, played by Matt Damon. Also according to Cinemablend, Theron is excited about the role and calls the script “epic”. July 17, 2026 in theaters.
Theron is an actor who has played big roles. Mad Max: Fury Road, Atomic Blonde, The Old Guard made her a star. She said filming Fury Road for 100 days was amazing but working with Nolan on The Odyssey made her feel like it was just as big of an opportunity.
Theron will play Circe, a sorceress who can turn people into animals in The Odyssey. She says Nolan is a director who knows exactly what he wants in a movie. She’s willing to do what he wants because she trusts him. Theron’s talents are perfect for Circe who is mysterious and terrifying.
Filming has not started for Theron yet. She said she’ll start filming two weeks after her interview with The Hollywood Reporter. Scotland is where filming is taking place and it started in February 2025. She’ll be joining the group after everyone else has been filming for months so she feels like a newbie.

Homer’s Greek epic The Odyssey is the story of Odysseus’ journey home after the Trojan War. He has to deal with gods, monsters and a lot of dangers. The images in the movie are going to be amazing and epic because Nolan decided to shoot everything with an IMAX camera.
The Odyssey has a star studded cast. Along with Matt Damon and Charlize Theron, Tom Holland plays Odysseus’ son Telemachus and Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson and Jon Bernthal are all in the movie. Damon and Theron are the only two who have been confirmed, though, as the others have not been.
She hasn’t read The Odyssey in a while but she’s not worried. She thinks her experience and acting chops will be enough for Circe. In Atomic Blonde she’s played characters that require both physicality and mystery which will come in handy for this.
The Odyssey was Nolan’s most expensive film to date, costing $250 million to make. To get lifelike and amazing images, the film was shot in Iceland, Italy and Morocco. And the new, lighter and quieter IMAX cameras made it possible to shoot the tough sequences.
Theron has done big shoots before. She said the experience on Fury Road was overwhelming but Nolan’s approach gave her confidence. She’s excited to be part of this big project and wants to blow the audience away.
Before Jurassic World Rebirth was released, the first trailer for The Odyssey was shown in theaters but it was also leaked online. Matt Damon played Odysseus and Tom Holland played Telemachus in the film. Everyone is more excited to see the film because of this trailer.
Theron is an actress who can do nuanced and powerful characters. Since Circe needs to be both attractive and strong, which she will probably do well, she needs to have both. In a way, fans are waiting to see how she will bring this character out.
In terms of story and execution, The Odyssey will be a great film. This film will be a masterpiece because of Nolan and actors like Theron. Odysseus and Circe’s adventures on the IMAX screen in 2026 has the world counting down the days.
