Deadly Flood Wave Devastates Kerrville: Guadalupe River Overflows in 2025

In Kerrville, Texas, a disaster occurred. The Guadalupe River unleashed a deadly flood on July 4, 2025 and Kerrville was hit hard. The historic flood caused by the heavy rain resulted in evacuations, rescues and tragically, deaths. Let’s go back to what happened during this disaster.

Early Friday morning the little town of Kerrville, about 60 miles northwest of San Antonio, was in chaos. The Guadalupe River rose to its second highest level ever due to over 10 inches of rain overnight, more than the 1987 flood. The National Weather Service issued multiple flash flood warnings calling it a “deadly flood wave”. Streets became rivers and houses were being swept away in Kerrville, Texas.

The flooding was bad. The Guadalupe River was at 29.45 feet at Hunt and some reports had it at 34 feet, close to the all time high of 36 feet. In kerrville tx entire neighborhoods near the river were underwater. Videos showed cars and buildings underwater with trash everywhere. According to the Kerr County Sheriff’s Office people were stranded on roofs and needed to be rescued immediately.

Evacuations started early. The Kerrville police and fire department worked around the clock to get people out of harm’s way. Those displaced were taken to an emergency shelter set up at First United Methodist Church on Thompson Drive. Overnight Camp Mystic, an all girls camp located on the river in Kerrville, Texas was evacuated. Everyone near the river was told to get to higher ground ASAP.

The city of Kerrville declared a disaster. Mayor Joe Herring Jr. activated the emergency plan. Every 4th of July celebration was cancelled as the priority was rescue. Walmart in Kerrville, Texas was the reunification site for families torn apart by the flood. Due to high water Thompson Drive and Arcadia Loop were blocked.

The Kerr County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed fatalities but the number is not being released to the public yet as they are still notifying families. Authorities are calling the flooding in Kerrville, Texas a “once in a lifetime” event. The search and rescue operation continued throughout the day but there are still people unaccounted for in the Hunt area. Ingram, which is nearby, had houses, businesses and even an RV park destroyed by the Guadalupe River.

This is one of the worst floods in Kerrville’s history. Although the river may have broken a new record the gauge at Hunt stopped working according to meteorologists. The community of Kerrville, Texas is still reeling from the damage and emergency teams are still assessing the situation. The National Weather Service is warning of more rain to come which will keep the area on edge.
