Superman Soars Past Jurassic World Rebirth to Claim Box Office Glory in July 2025

2025 is shaping up to be a big summer for blockbusters and Superman is the latest to rise to the top of the domestic box office. James Gunn’s Superman knocked Jurassic World Rebirth off the top spot in July. According to ScreenRant, Superman has opened to a massive $123 million from July 11-13, 2025. That’s the third biggest opening of the year behind Lilo and Stitch at $146 million and A Minecraft Movie at $162.7 million. It also dethroned Jurassic World Rebirth from the top spot.

Under James Gunn’s direction, Superman marks a new era for DC Studios with David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. This is a new chapter for the studio with Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran at the helm. The film opened to $123 million and beat the opening of the 2013 DCEU launch Man of Steel which opened to $116.6 million.

It also got an A- CinemaScore so word of mouth should be strong. Industry insiders think Superman will make $650-705 million worldwide. That’s well above its $562.5 million break even point especially with a $225 million budget. This is a big win for the superhero genre which has had a tough 2025. Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts both flopped at the box office despite $180 million budgets.

In the meantime, Jurassic World Rebirth, the 7th installment of the dinosaur franchise, fell to 2nd in its sophomore weekend, making $40 million domestically. That’s a 57% drop from its original 3-day opening of $91 million. Directed by Gareth Edwards and starring Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali and Jonathan Bailey, the film has made $529 million globally as of July 13, 2025.

That puts it above Marvel’s Thunderbolts ($382 million) and Captain America: Brave New World ($415 million). With $1 billion, it’s the 6th highest grossing film of the year. Despite a 52% Rotten Tomatoes and a B CinemaScore, the film’s $180 million budget puts it in a good position to make money. To break even the company needs to make around $450 million worldwide, which it has done.

The domestic box office for the weekend of July 11-13 is a real barnburner as F1: The Movie takes 3rd with $13 million. How to Train Your Dragon is 4th with $7.8 million and Elio rounds out the top 5 with $3.9 million. Superman and Jurassic World Rebirth show that old franchises can still thrive even when they’re not making money and not getting great reviews.

As July goes on the movie industry is gearing up for a big push with Disney’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps expected to open with a $125-155 million box office. Superman is rebooting the superhero genre and Jurassic World Rebirth is proving that dinosaur movies are timeless. The summer of 2025 is shaping up to be a big one at the box office with domestic revenue expected to hit $4 billion.
