Texas flooding: July 4, 2025, Texas had a big rainstorm and Kerr County had massive flooding, 82+ people dead, 28 of them kids. The girls summer camp at Camp Mystic was flooded and 10 kids and 1 counselor are still missing. According to CNN the Guadalupe River rose 26 feet in 45 minutes.
Camp Mystic is a Christian camp that’s been around for over 100 years and is located on the Guadalupe River. There were 750 girls at the camp when the floodwaters hit. The river overflowed because of 10 inches of rain overnight. Rescue teams worked all night to find the missing kids, many of whom were swept away.
Camp Mystic owner Dick Eastland died trying to rescue the kids from the flood. His grandson posted on Instagram that he was the most unselfish person. The camp and the families of the kids are devastated. Everyone loved him.
Ground and air searches were done by the rescue teams. To help find the 10 missing kids and 1 counselor the Texas Air National Guard deployed their military drones which are used for reconnaissance. The United Cajun Navy rescue squad also helped. According to Nick Sorter of this squad the kids were not prepared when the water hit.

The National Weather Service issued a flood warning at 1:14 am Friday but a lot of people may not have gotten it in time. According to CNN Texas congressman Joaquin Castro said budget cuts to the agency may have led to poor weather forecasting which contributed to this tragedy.
8 year old Sarah Marsh from Alabama and 9 year old Janie Hunt are among the at least 28 kids who have died in Kerr County. Greta Toranzo and Lainey Landry’s parents are still waiting to hear about their 9 and 10 year old girls. Everyone is praying for a miracle to find these kids.
Cassie Hyde, media director for Camp Mystic, was crying as she talked about the kids and her deceased boss. It happened so fast, she said. The Guadalupe River rose 20 feet in under 2 hours, no time to prepare. Inside camp photos show damage.
Some survivors said they clung to trees to avoid being swept away by the floodwaters. When they heard the news, parents like Michael McCown packed up and drove from Austin to Hill Country. His daughter Linnie was one of the kids staying at the Bubble Inn lodge which was totally flooded. Several households were waiting to hear.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott visited Camp Mystic on Saturday. He said the area was devastated, the floodwaters were up to the roofs of the huts. He declared Sunday a day of prayer for the state to remember the dead and help with the search.
The rain will continue until Sunday according to the National Weather Service and that will make the search harder. Kerr County wanted to put up flood warning sirens but never did. Now disaster preparedness is being questioned.
850 have been saved but many are still unaccounted for. Eloise Peck and Lila Bonner are two kids who have been confirmed dead. Texas is trying to recover from this tragedy while their families are still grieving.
Everyone in Texas and the US is shocked by the Camp Mystic tragedy. Rescue teams and the community are still looking for the missing kids and counselors. We gotta be better prepared since this is a reminder of how cruel nature can be.
